4 Tips For Beautiful And Healthy Nails

Posted on: 24 June 2017

Just like your shoes, people often judge you based on the condition of your nails. Even if you're not a superficial person, you don't want your nails to look ragged, causing someone to get the wrong idea about how you care for yourself. Here are just some of the things you can do to keep your nails looking great and most importantly, healthy.

Protect Your Cuticles

Ensure you're protecting your cuticles as the condition of your cuticles will have a direct impact on the health and length of your nails. Cuticles that are damaged can stunt growth and increase your risk for an infection. While it's okay to remove any cuticle overgrowth, removing the entire cuticle is never a good idea. Instead of doing this, make an effort to keep your cuticles moisturized so that you don't have to worry about cutting them in the first place.

Avoid Harsh Nail Polishes

All nail polishes are not created equal and in the world of nail polish, cheaper isn't always best. Aim for higher quality polishes that are free of dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene and formaldehyde. These toxic ingredients can damage your nail bed, causing it to thin and dry out and even become discolored. Look for healthier brands that don't include these ingredients, but instead include nutrient and vitamins that can strengthen the nail.

Don't File Too Much

Avoid filing your nails too hard. Some people make the mistake of using a nail file to shorten their nail, but nail files are meant to shape the nail. If you're trying to shorten your nail, the friction from the back and forth motion for a prolonged time can damage the nail. Use a pair of nail scissors to shorten the nail and then briefly use a quality nail file, such as a Czech glass nail file, to shape it.

Take Polish Breaks

It's still a good idea to take a polish break from time to time. Your nails need oxygen to grow and most importantly, to remain healthy. Nail polish is a coating that somewhat inhibits this flow. For this reason, it's a good idea to not wear polish periodically so that you can ensure proper oxygen flow to your nails. For example, maybe choose one week out of the month to go polish free.
